Topic:  “GOD’S MERCY IN THE GOLDEN CALF INCIDENT”

Text: EXODUS 32:1-6; 34:1-9

Memory Verse: Exodus 34:6-7 – “And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin….”

Personally, I think if I should see half of the miracles the Israelites saw, I will be so spiritual and will not even dare sin at all. I think all the miracles should have helped the Israelites to fear God and live righteously. Unfortunately, whether then or now, miracles are not enough to instill the nature of God and the fear of God in the hearts of men. In fact, men sometimes get used to those miracles in ways that no longer convict them of their sins.

The Israelites saw how their God, YAHWEH, dealt with all the gods of Egypt, yet ended up making an idol out of fear that Moses was staying too long with God. What a reason? How quickly do we look away to other gods when we feel the LORD is taking too long to come through for us? How can the miracle of the past help us to wait patiently for the ones we expect?

Despite the Israelites’ sin of creating and worshipping the golden calf, God revealed Himself as compassionate, gracious, and abounding in love. His willingness to forgive their transgressions highlights His merciful nature. God’s love is not diminished by our failures but is ever ready to restore and forgive. The only problem is that we may have to suffer the consequences of our sins. How have you experienced God’s forgiveness and mercy in your life? How can you extend forgiveness and mercy to others?

PRAYER: Merciful God, thank You for Your past miracles, compassion and grace. Help me to always wait patiently for You, and to accept Your forgiveness and extend the same mercy to those around me. May I always remember that Your love is greater than my sins in Jesus’ name, Amen.
