Topic: “Showcasing the power of God through his name”
Text: John 16:23 – 26a
Memory Verse: Isaiah 9:6 – “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a son is given And his name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace”.
There is great power in a name; it is significant to note that the name of the Lord reveals who he is. Therefore, when we call on that name, it reveals the power in the name. It is not like any other name; it is a name that carries with it, the power of God.
Jesus told his disciples that God would answer their request if they ask in his name. Our names are important and mean a lot to us, but do not command the power that the name of Jesus has. Jesus’ name is the only way through which God has made available to us to seek him; Jesus earned it by the sacrifice he made for you on the cross. His resurrection has made it possible for you to have access to God in his name.
Our memory verse is the prophecy of Isaiah about Jesus’ birth 700 years before his birth. God speaks through the prophecy, the names of Jesus. Each of the names reveals the nature of God’s heart and his desire for all men.
Wonderful counselor reminds us that Jesus will guide us in every decision we need to make. If we seek him as our counselor, he will guide us to know his mind for every situation. Mighty God reveals his power to protect and defend you; also emotionally, he encourages you and helps you to overcome the fear of the future. Everlasting Father speaks to the faithfulness of God as a father and a provider. As a perfect father, he knows what you need at every point in time. He is called the prince of peace, meaning he is sovereign and will bring you to a point of calm and rest which no other person can.
You cannot appropriate that name without a relationship with him. Today, call upon that name for your salvation and wholeness, then, you can seek him for other things. The power in the name of Jesus will set you free. Amen
PRAYER: There is no other name through which man may be saved other than the name of Jesus. I call upon that name today for my deliverance. I appropriate the power of the finished work of Christ on the cross and declare that it will meet me at the point of my need.
