Topic: “OVERCOMING SIN: THE PLACE OF FELLOWSHIP WITH THE BRETHREN”
Text: Hebrews 10: 24-25, 1John 1:7
Memory Verse: “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching” – Hebrew 10:25.
“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another”(Proverbs 27:17). The Christian life is not meant to be lived in isolation. The church, as a community of believers, exists for fellowship. And when it comes to the struggle against sin, the support and encouragement of our brothers and sisters in Christ is absolutely vital. Overcoming sin is a journey, and we are not meant to walk it alone.
In Hebrew 10: 24-25, we are encouraged to spur one another on towards love and good deeds, meet together and encourage one another as the day of the Lord draws near. In our moments of weakness, when we feel like giving in to temptation, the fellowship of brethren and the encouragement of our brothers and sisters can make all the difference. This is so crucial. Equally important is the word of God in 1 John 1:7 (MSG) that “if we walk in the light, God himself being the light, we also experience a shared life with one another”. Staying in the company of believers makes a believer to continue in fellowship with God who is the light. As we fellowship with like-minded believers, our relationship with God who is the light grows deeper, making our lights shine brighter. Our light will shine in the darkness of temptation to sin, and the darkness of sin will not overpower it. (John1:5).
Fellowship with the brethren equally provides a unique opportunity to have accountability partners with whom we can share our struggle with sin. James 5:16 tells us to “confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of the righteous availeth much”. Friend, how consistent are you in fellowshipping with the brethren? Do you have a bible based and bible believing Church where you worship? And if yes, how consistent are you? One of the ways by which you can overcome sin is fellowshipping with the brethren. Don’t take it for granted!
PRAYER: Ask God to help you build a genuine relationship with brothers and sisters in Christ and to make positive lasting impact in the Christian life of other believers.
