APRIL 14: “OVERCOMING SIN: THE POWER OF GOD’S WORD”

One of the problems faced by malnourished children is a weak immune system. Such children easily succumb to illnesses because their body cannot adequately fight the invading infectious agents. Likewise, a believer who does not feed regularly on God’s word will suffer spiritual malnutrition.  Such an individual will easily succumb to temptations to sin. The only way out of this is feeding regularly on God’s word. David knew the importance of this when he said: “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you”. Psalm 119:11. A consistent fellowship with the word of God strengthens our spirit man, providing us with the ability to say no to sin.

In our text for today, we saw how our Lord Jesus Christ was able to overcome the temptations from the devil through the word of God. When He was tempted to command stones to become bread, He responded, “Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God”. He was tested again to throw himself down from the pinnacle of the temple to which He responded“it is written again, you shall not tempt the Lord your God”.The third time, the devil tempted Him with materialism and he rebuked the devil by speaking the word of God again. The devil had no choice but to leave Him.

This shows us that overcoming sin by the word of God is possible for every believer in Christ. The word of God exposes the tactics of the devil to us daily. It shows us the nature of sin, revealing its deceitful allure and its destructive consequences.

Beloved, make a decision and a commitment to feed on God’s word every day. Make a practice of choosing a passage of Scripture and meditate on it throughout the day. As you do this, you will experience the transformative power of God’s word and you will find strength to resist temptation.

PRAYER: Ask God for grace to be consistent in studying his word. Pray against every form of distraction to studying God’s word.
