Topic: “THE NEED FOR A PERFECT SACRIFICE”
Text: Hebrews 7:24-27
Memory Verse: “For such an High Priest became us, who is Holy, harmless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and made higher than the heavens” – Heb 7:26.
In the Old Testament, the priests played a crucial role in offering sacrifices to atone for the sins of the people. However, the Bible teaches that these priests, and the sacrifices they offered, were imperfect and insufficient to fully atone for sin.
Leviticus 21:1-9 tells us about the high standards of purity and holiness required of the priests. They were not allowed to come near a dead body, nor could they marry a divorced woman or prostitute. These regulations emphasized the importance of the priest’s purity and separation from sin.
However, despite these strict regulations, the priests themselves were not perfect. They were sinners, just like the people they represented before God. This is why today’s text, Hebrews 7:26, 27 tell us that Jesus our High Priest, is “Holy, harmless, undefiled, and made higher than the heavens”. Jesus Christ is a perfect Priest, who offered a perfect sacrifice to atone for our sins.
The need for a perfect sacrifice is clear. If the priests themselves were sinners, how could they offer sacrifices that fully atone for the sins of others? The answer is, they couldn’t. That’s why Jesus, the perfect Lamb of God, came to offer Himself as the ultimate sacrifice for our sins.
PRAYER: Heavenly father, thank you for providing Jesus, our High Priest, who offered Himself as the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. Help us to appreciate the depth of your love and the sufficiency of Jesus’ sacrifice in Jesus’ name, Amen.
