Topic:  “ The power of Christ’s death over fear ”

Text: Psalm 55:1-8 Matthew 10:26-33

Memory Verse: Psalm 23:4 – “Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for thou art with me. Thy rod thy staff they comfort me”.

The Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary defines fear as the bad feelings that you have when you are in danger. It is the apprehension of evil that may or may not eventually happen to one. Since biblical times. The devil has consistently used fear as a weapon against the children of God. Fear ranges from fear of death, to fear of loss of material things, fear of going to jail or being incarcerated, fear of darkness, fear of rejection by people. The list of fears is unending but most can be grouped under the fear of the unknown.

If we knew tomorrow, most of our fears will not be there. However, there is someone who knows tomorrow, who knows the end from the beginning. That is the all-knowing God, the I am that I am, the Alpha and the Omega. When we walk intimately with Him, it gives us the confidence that we need not fear when we walk through the valley of the shadow of death for, He is with us.

Interestingly, fear does not respect anybody, as it assails kings, it assails the down-trodden common man; it also assails prophets and pastors. It furthermore assails Heads of States. Remember it assailed Peter when he denied Jesus. It assailed Elijah the Prophet when he ran to the wilderness because of Jezebel in 1 Kings 19.

How then do we conquer fear in our lives?

One of my fathers in the Lord is always fond of saying that fear is the opposite of faith. I believe so much in this saying. He always uses the example of a father who puts his son on a high fence while he stays on the ground and tells the son to jump into his hands.  The son jumps without any fear into the hands of his father because he has faith in the ability of his father to catch him.

If we have faith in Jesus Christ and Him crucified on the cross of Calvary, we will have nothing to fear. The refrain of that beautiful song by William and Gloria Gaither “Because He lives” says because He lives, I can face tomorrow because he lives, all fear is gone; because I know He holds the future, And life is worth the living just because He lives.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, I hand over my life to you; please keep me safe from the spirit of fear, Amen.
