TOPIC: “SHARING IN CHRIST’S SUFFERINGS ON THE JOURNEY”
TEXT: Genesis 39: 17 – 23
MEMORY VERSE: “ So, Joseph’s master took him and put him in the prison, a place where the king’s prisoners were confined; so, he was there in the prison.” – Genesis 39:20
Today, we reflect on the cost of obedience—the price Joseph paid for refusing to yield to temptation. His reward for righteousness was imprisonment for a crime he did not commit. This is often the pattern of the world: when you choose reverence for God, the systems of the world may respond with frustration, resistance, or outright hostility. Scripture calls this persecution.
Paul prepares believers for this reality in 2 Timothy 3:12: “All who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.” This is not meant to discourage you but to equip you. While persecutions today may not look like physical torture, imprisonment, or death—as many early believers endured—they often appear in more subtle forms: being denied opportunities, being misunderstood, being sidelined, or being treated unfairly because of your convictions.
Yet persecution carries a profound privilege: it allows us to share in Christ’s sufferings. Hebrews gives us two powerful insights. First, Christ learned obedience through the things He suffered (Hebrews 5:8). Second, because He Himself suffered when tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted and exposed to suffering (Hebrews 2:18). When you endure hardship for righteousness’ sake, you are being shaped into deeper obedience—and you are never alone. Heaven stands ready to help.
Jesus Himself assures us in Matthew 5:11–12 that we are blessed when persecuted for righteousness’ sake. He commands us to rejoice, because our reward in heaven is great. The world may punish obedience, but God never forgets it.
So, if walking in step with God has brought you into a difficult place, take heart. You are not being abandoned, you are being refined; and your faithfulness is seen, remembered and richly rewarded by God.
PRAYER: Thank You Lord for help that is available and grace to overcome. Help me to be able to go through persecution with joy, knowing I am sharing in your suffering. Today, I pray for those suffering violent persecution because of their faith, that you come to their aid and enable them to stand firm, Amen.
