TOPIC: “HOLDING ON TO HURT INSTEAD OF HEALING”
TEXT: Hebrews 12:15
MEMORY VERSE: “Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled” – Hebrews 12:15.
Bitterness rarely announces itself at the beginning. It often starts as a small internal reaction to hurt, disappointment, or betrayal. However, Scripture warns believers to watch carefully, lest any root of bitterness grows within the heart.
The writer of Hebrews describes bitterness as a “root,” meaning it grows beneath the surface before it becomes visible above the ground. This shows that unresolved hurt is not static; it develops overtime and eventually affects many areas of a person’s life.
When hurt is not surrendered to God for healing, it gradually turns into bitterness and bitterness does not remain private—it spreads influence. It affects relationships, spiritual sensitivity and even the ability to receive grace.
God’s intention is not for His people to live in cycles of emotional injury, but in continuous healing. That is why the Scripture warns us to be vigilant, not passive. Emotional wounds that are ignored rarely disappear; they deepen.
Forgiveness therefore, is not only about releasing others—it is about protecting your own heart from becoming a place where bitterness grows unchecked.
Application
Examine your heart honestly today. Is there any unresolved hurt you have ignored or justified over time? Do not allow it to take root. Bring it before God and choose healing over holding on.
PRAYER: Father, I receive grace to deal with every hidden root of bitterness in my heart. Heal my emotions and restore my inner peace. Help me not to hold on to hurt, but to walk in continual healing and forgiveness, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
