TOPIC: “CHOOSING REVENGE OVER RELEASE”
TEXT: Romans 12:19
MEMORY VERSE: “Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord” – Rom 12:19.
Scripture presents a clear instruction to believers: personal revenge is not part of the life of one who is aligned with God. Instead, believers are called to surrender justice to God, trusting His perfect judgment.
This instruction is important because the desire for revenge is often a natural response to hurt. When wronged, the human heart instinctively seeks repayment, correction, or emotional balance. However, God’s Word calls believers to a higher way of living—one that trusts His sovereignty over justice.
Choosing revenge keeps a person emotionally tied to the offence. It sustains the connection to pain, even when the event has passed. In contrast, release through forgiveness creates spiritual freedom and realignment with God’s order.
There is always a subtle temptation to feel justified in retaliation, especially when the hurt is deep or undeserved. Yet Scripture reminds us that vengeance belongs to God alone. This means that the believer is not the final judge of wrongs suffered.
Alignment with God requires surrendering not only the hurt, but also the right to repay it. When this surrender happens, the heart is freed from cycles of bitterness and internal conflict.
Forgiveness, therefore, is not passive weakness—it is active trust in God’s justice.
Application
Examine your heart today. Are there situations where you are still emotionally “demanding repayment” for wrongs done to you? Surrender them to God. Choose release over revenge and trust His justice fully.
PRAYER: Father, I surrender every desire for revenge into Your hands. Heal my heart from the need to repay wrongs done to me. Teach me to trust Your justice and walk in the freedom of forgiveness and alignment with You, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
