TOPIC: “LETTING GO EVEN WHEN IT STILL HURTS”
TEXT: Psalm 34:18
MEMORY VERSE: “The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit” – Psalm 34:18.
One of the greatest struggles in forgiveness is not the decision itself, but the pain that remains afterward. Many people assume that forgiveness is complete only when the hurt disappears. However, Scripture shows that healing is often a process, even after the decision to forgive has been made.
Psalm 34:18 reveals that God does not distance Himself from the brokenhearted; rather, He draws near. This means that pain does not disqualify a person from alignment with God—it becomes an opportunity for a deeper encounter with Him. Forgiveness is first a decision of obedience, not a feeling. Feelings may take time to align, but obedience sets the direction. When a believer chooses to forgive, even while the pain is still present, it creates room for God to begin the work of healing within the heart.
Holding on to hurt delays healing, but releasing it—even imperfectly—opens the door for restoration. It is also important to understand that forgiveness does not always remove memory immediately, but it removes the control that the memory has over the heart.
Alignment with God is maintained not by the absence of pain, but by the presence of surrender. As the heart yields to God consistently, what once caused deep pain gradually loses its hold.
Application
If you have made the decision to forgive but still feel the pain, do not be discouraged. Continue to surrender that hurt to God daily. Stay aligned with Him, trusting that healing will follow obedience.
PRAYER: Father, I bring every pain in my heart before You. Thank You for being near to me in my brokenness. Help me to remain aligned with You as I walk through the process of healing. Strengthen me to let go completely and restore my heart fully, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
