SEPTEMBER 13: “LAZINESS AS A VEHICLE OF SIN”

DATE: Sunday 13  September  2026

TOPIC:  “LAZINESS AS A VEHICLE OF SIN”

TEXT: Colossians 3:23-24

MEMORY VERSE:  “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters” – Colossians 3:23 NIV.

Several things act as vehicles to sin, but in the coming days, we will focus on three. The first is a familiar one—laziness.

The popular saying, “Idle hands are the devil’s workshop,” though not directly from the Bible, carries deep truth. In Ephesians 4:28, stealing is linked to a lack of honest work, and those who steal are encouraged to change and begin working with their hands.

The Bible gives multiple warnings about laziness. It connects laziness with foolishness (Proverbs 6:6), poverty (Proverbs 10:4), destruction, excessive comfort (Proverbs 6:9–12), and even deep sleep (Proverbs 19:15).

From the beginning, God gave man work. In Genesis, He placed man in the Garden of Eden to tend and keep it. Man was not created to be idle but to live with purpose.

One major reason many of us struggle with laziness is a lack of clarity about purpose. Nothing feels meaningful, so nothing feels worth doing. However, you must understand this: discovering purpose is part of fulfilling purpose. That season of uncertainty is not wasted—it is part of the journey.

You do not find purpose by sitting still; you find purpose by starting. The Bible is already full of instructions and desires from God. As you serve, act and apply yourself, purpose begins to unfold. Faith without works is dead.

Laziness is not in God’s nature. Your Father is not idle, so you should not carry that nature.

As Ecclesiastes 9:10 says, whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.

Do not die with what God has placed inside you. Pour it out. Let the world see the beauty God has put within you, even in the midst of darkness.

PRAYER: Father, help me to be diligent in every work of life. I cast away every spirit of laziness and procrastination. I work according to time and seasons and the works of my hands bear good fruit, Amen.
