SEPTEMBER 28: “WISDOM IN DESIRE AND DISCIPLINE”

TOPIC:  “WISDOM IN DESIRE AND DISCIPLINE”

TEXT: Proverbs 23:1–5

MEMORY VERSE:  “Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle” – Proverbs 23: 5 (NIV).

This passage speaks deeply about restraint, wisdom and self-control.

First, it addresses how we carry ourselves in moments of opportunity or abundance. When you find yourself in a place of privilege, access, or increase, be careful. Do not lose control. Do not consume everything simply because it is available. Even in enjoyment, there must be discipline.

Not every open door is an invitation to indulge.

It also warns against craving. Sometimes, what looks appealing is not meant for you. If you are not careful, desire can push you into actions that lack wisdom and self-control.

Then it shifts to something many people struggle with: the pursuit of wealth.
“Do not wear yourself out to get rich.”

This is not a call to laziness, but a warning against obsession. There are people who work endlessly, sacrificing their health, peace and relationships, all in the name of making money. Yet, what is the value of wealth if you are too drained or unwell to enjoy it?

God values rest. It is not weakness, it is wisdom.

Finally, the passage reminds us how uncertain riches can be. Money can disappear quickly. What seems stable today can be gone tomorrow. Life is fragile and tomorrow is not guaranteed.

So, the call is simple: live wisely. Be disciplined in desire. Work diligently, but do not lose yourself in the pursuit of wealth. Learn to rest and remember that true security is not found in what you have, but in God.

PRAYER: Lord, teach me self-control and wisdom. Help me to manage my desires, work with balance and trust in You above all else, Amen.
