Topic: THE BLESINGS OF DILIGENCE
Text: 2 Kings 2:1 – 14
Memory Verse: “And he took the mantle of Elijah which fell from him, and smote the waters, and said where is the God of Elijah? And when he had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over.” 2 Kings 2:14
God told Elijah the prophet to anoint Elisha to take over from him. He found him plowing in the field and cast his mantle on him. Elisha went back home and had a celebration with one of his oxen and followed Prophet Elijah, to be his servant.
Elisha was a diligent and loyal servant who learnt at the feet of his master. When his master Elijah was to be taken by God, he asked his servant, Elisha, to wait for him in four cities and four times Elisha said he would not leave him. He was not like some servants who would use every opportunity to relax.
Elisha knew that the Lord was going to take his master away to Heaven and had resolved to get a parting gift from him, which was not a selfish one at all.
When Elijah asked him “what should I do for you?” he did not hesitate to say “let a double portion of your spirit be upon me” 2Kings 2:9. He wanted to serve God twice as much as his master and was ready to go through whatever was necessary to achieve this goal. Most likely because he had seen the good effect of Elijah’s service to God.
Having a godly mentor teaches one to hunger for more of God and if we are determined and focused like Elisha, we also will receive the desired effect as he did in his time.
Prayer:
O Lord, I want more of you, fill me afresh with your Holy Spirit in Jesus name. Amen
