Topic: “A FORTRESS OF SALVATION”
Text: Psalm 28:1-9
Memory Verse: “The Lord is the strength of his people, a fortress of salvation for his anointed one. Save your people and bless your inheritance; be their shepherd and carry them forever” – Psalm 28:8-9
This Psalm begins with a passionate plea by King David unto God for help and mercy. In verse 7, he declares that the Lord is his strength and shield; and that his heart trusts in the Lord. The result of his trust is that joy fills his heart and makes him leap with a song in praise to God. David in rounding off the Psalm gives more praise to God as he expands the scope of God’s protective work to include the whole of Israel. By implication, David extends his understanding of God’s shepherding work to include all children of God in every generation, and that provides for you today.
As a shepherd, David had protected his sheep from deadly predators – lions and bears, and so understood what privilege it is for God to be our shepherd – keeping us from all foul forces. David prayed that God would protect, care for, and carry his people forever. We all benefit from this prayer today because we are the Lord’s heritage. Indeed, our God has continued to shepherd, strengthen, and carry us and we are shielded from the evil one. He has become our fortress of salvation and in Him we have assurance of protection. Let not your heart skip with fear or anxiety over the uncertainties of the now or of the future, because you are the Lord’s heritage, and he has your back fully covered. He already knows what the future holds since its all together in His hands. Receive peace and be at rest, it is well.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, in you I rest my heart for you are my rock and my fortress. Please help me to absolutely depend on you as I go through this life. Amen.
