August 19: “GOD’S WORD, OUR DEFENSE”

In the letter of Paul to the Corinthian Church, he tried to establish the matter of the identity of the Christian as a new creation, knowing well that one’s identity would determine what they do and how. As new creatures, the old way of doing things had been put away and the new put on. When they were of the world, they did everything the way the world would, but having become Christians, everything was now spiritually done, including the issue of combating the devil and other forces of evil.

Someone once said that the best form of defense is attack. If this is true, then one needs a very solid weapon with which to approach the opposition. Paul says in our text that the weapons that the believer uses to fight are spiritual, mighty to pull down all strongholds because they are God’s weapons. These weapons, according to the text do demolish arguments and pretensions that set themselves up against the knowledge of God. They are able to take captive every thought and make them obey Christ. One of these spiritual weapons that God has given us to fight with, is His word. We can rest behind the truth of God’s word and also take it with us to attack negative thoughts that attempt to invade our minds. Our minds are a battle ground, and we must learn to take captive every negative thought that may come to get us off our assignment with God in order to stay connected to Him and enjoy our communion with Him. This is a good way of defending ourselves from what Satan brings against us. So, take in the word of God intentionally and use it to defend yourself by the help of the Holy Spirit – Matt 4:1-11

Prayer: Lord, give me a deeper understanding of your word and teach me to defend myself with it as I rightly apply it to my life in every situation. Amen.
