Topic: HIS PREROGATIVE
Text: John 21:15 – 23.
Memory Verse: “If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? Follow thou me” John 21:22
One of the pertinent lessons we must come to understand about God in relation to His dealings with man and the entirety of creation is the exercise of His discretion. It is His absolute preserve and prerogative to exhibit His preferences, might and power in the manner He chooses. This is also a further expression of His innate sovereign nature.
It was his choice to save us (John 15:15-16), not as a matter of favouritism (James 3:17), but in the context of his preordained plan and process of reconciling sinful man to a saintly life (John 1:12; 3:16; Rom 8:29-30).
In our main text, Peter failed to focus on the call of the Master to follow Him, but rather became more interested in what Jesus was going to do with the Disciple whom He loved (John). Jesus didn’t mince words as to His prerogative over the life of every individual when he told Peter to be preoccupied with that which He has asked him to do rather than what becomes of John.
While we ought to become interested in what God may be doing in other people’s lives, we must not attempt and cannot afford to play God in such lives, regardless of their real or perceived estates. He is the one at work in the centre of life of every man (Mal 1:2-3; Rom 9: 13-16).
It is also His absolute privilege to reveal or refrain from revealing to us His mind concerning any matter whatsoever. The secret things of God are His, except that which he chooses to reveal (Deut 29:29; Amos 3:7).
Prayer: Father, I thank you for the exercise of your choices over my life. Help me to see your hand leading me in every way, in Jesus’ name, amen.
