TOPIC: “FORGIVENESS IS KEY”
TEXT: Genesis 45: 1 – 15
MEMORY VERSE: “Now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me ahead of you to save life and preserve our family.” – Genesis 45:5
Joseph’s journey had taken him from the pit to Potiphar’s house, from prison to the palace and now, to the moment of reunion with the very brothers who betrayed him. By this time, he had interpreted Pharaoh’s dream, offered divine wisdom for navigating the famine and been appointed Prime Minister over all Egypt. The famine spread across the region, reaching Canaan, where his family lived. In search of food, his brothers came to Egypt—unknowingly walking into the presence of the brother they once sold.
When Joseph recognized them, he stood in a position of absolute authority. Humanly speaking, he had every right to retaliate. He could have denied them food, exposed their actions, or used his influence to repay their cruelty. However, Joseph’s heart had been shaped by God through years of refining. Instead of bitterness, he chose mercy. Instead of revenge, he offered reassurance. Instead of reminding them of their wrong, he reminded them of God’s purpose.
Joseph saw beyond the betrayal. He saw God’s hand. He understood that what they meant for evil, God had woven into His plan to preserve their family and an entire generation. This perspective freed him from resentment and empowered him to forgive.
God often turns the stumbling blocks thrown at us into stepping stones that lift us into destiny. When you understand this, it becomes easier to release those who hurt you. Like Joseph, you can learn to see people not as obstacles but as instruments God used along the journey. This understanding guards your heart from bitterness and keeps you from seeking vengeance.
Scripture calls us to this same posture. Matthew 5:44 urges us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us. Romans 12:14 instructs us to bless and not curse. When you embrace the truth that all things work together for our good, you refuse to let strife, anger, or unforgiveness take root.
Beloved, let your heart remain tender. Let mercy triumph over resentment. Let God’s purpose overshadows human actions; and let forgiveness flow freely, knowing that God is the One who writes your story.
PRAYER: Lord, help me to truly forgive those who have wronged me. Do not let bitterness, resentment or strife hold me back in my walk with You. Give me greater insights on the bigger picture so that I will not settle for the lesser matters of trying to take vengeance, Amen.
