TOPIC: “INSEPARABLE RELATIONSHIP”
TEXT: Ruth 1: 10 – 18; Rom. 8:37-39
MEMORY VERSE: “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” – Rom 8:38-39.
In any relationship, the transcendental factor is love. In Greek Philosophy, there are different types of love: Eros, Philia, Storge, Ludus, Pragma, Philautia and Agape; however, all except Agape are conditional. For instance, Ludus love, romantic as it is, depends on response from the other. Agape love however is selfless, unconditional and universal – for all (John 3:16a).
In our texts for today, both Ruth and Paul in their statements made us to understand that; first, only mutual love for one another sustains a relationship (1 Cor. 13:13). Second, tragedy is not strong enough to separate us from God’s Agape love. There lies the difference between Ruth’s statement (Ruth 1:17) and Paul’s (Rom 8:38). While Eros, Ludus etc. stop at physical death, Agape is not affected by death, life, tragedies etc. Thus, when tragedy occur, the place to look to is God; who comforts us (2 Cor. 1:3-4).
Lastly, our loving relationship in Christ should be inseparable just like Ruth remained inseparable from Naomi because of her love and compassion for her.
PRAYER: Lord let me get to the place of full conviction and persuasion, that You will never stop loving me, and so do I in any situation.
