TOPIC: “WHEN THE HEART GROWS HARD”
TEXT: Ezekiel 36:26
MEMORY VERSE: “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh” – Ezekiel 36:26.
God’s promise in Ezekiel reveals His intention for every believer—to have a heart that is responsive, tender and aligned with Him. A “heart of flesh” speaks of sensitivity to God, openness to His Word and the capacity to love and forgive.
However, one of the dangers of prolonged unforgiveness is the gradual hardening of the heart.
Hardness of heart does not happen suddenly. It develops over time when hurt is repeatedly held onto instead of released. What begins as pain can gradually become resistance and resistance can eventually settle into hardness.
A hardened heart loses sensitivity. It becomes less responsive to conviction, less open to correction and less willing to extend grace. In such a state, alignment with God becomes difficult because God relates with a yielded and responsive heart.
Scripture repeatedly warns against hardness of heart because it affects both relationship with God and relationship with others. A person may still function outwardly, but inwardly, there is a growing disconnect from the tenderness that characterizes life in God.
God’s desire is not only to forgive but to transform the heart. This transformation requires cooperation; allowing Him to remove every layer of bitterness and replace it with His Spirit.
Alignment with God is sustained by a soft heart, not a guarded one.
Application
Examine your heart today. Have repeated hurts made you less sensitive, less open, or more guarded? Ask God to soften every hardened area and restore tenderness within you.
PRAYER: Father, I receive Your promise of a new heart. Remove every trace of hardness within me caused by unforgiveness and pain. Give me a tender and responsive heart that remains aligned with You at all times, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
