Topic: “Power of Unity in Prayer”
Text: 2 Chronicles 20:1-4
Memory Verse: 2 Chro 20:4 – “And Judah gathered themselves together, to ask help of the LORD: even out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD”.
The significance and power of unity in every aspect of human existence cannot be over-emphasized. Unity is important in prayer as it in marriage, etc. In our text today, king Jehoshaphat of Judah faced a national crisis. Some neighbouring communities had prepared to attack him and his people. Then he resolved to seek the face of God through fasting and prayer with the entire Judah. The people of Judah came massively in unison from every town in Judah to seek help from God.
It is possible that the people of Judah had divided opinions on how to respond to the national problem, but one thing made the difference, their unity in prayer. Their hearts were united together in prayer and God through their corporate prayer, won the battle for them, thus, “And when they began to sing and praise, the LORD set an ambushment against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten” (V. 22). You see, when our hearts are united as one in prayer, God takes on our battles. However, when we are divided, we fight with one another and the devil captures our destinies.
When a church or nation faces crisis, a united prayer can go a long way to bring down the hand of God for victory on their side. When divisions, troubles and calamities threaten the people of God, a united prayer can bring down the miracle needed at that moment. Prayer is indeed a powerful weapon, but when our hearts are divided in prayer, it becomes a mere shout into the air. It is time to mend our divided “kingdoms” and pour out our hearts in unison, as we trust God to step into our challenges as a church and nation.
PRAYER: Oh God, may our hearts be united in prayers in Jesus name, Amen.
