Topic: BORN INTO THE ROYAL FAMILY OF DAVID AS THE ROOT OF JESSE
Text: Matt 1:1-17, Isa 10, Rom 15:12, Mal 4:1
Memory Verse: And again, Isaiah says, the root of Jesse will spring up, one who will arise to rule over nations; in Him the gentiles will hope” Rom 15:12
Our Lead passage today is the same as yesterday’s. This is because of the author’s intention in giving the genealogy of Jesus to show that He is the Messiah that Israel had been waiting for. Therefore, Matthew began from Abraham and continued to David.
Yesterday, we referred to Abraham, but today we want to focus on David. Matthew shed light on a very important promise of God to David in the Old Testament. Matthew portrays Jesus as king of the Jews. However, God spoke to David that one of his descendants would sit on his throne forever.
The fulfilment of this determinate counsel of the Lord is one of the reasons that Jesus is called Son of David. The Lord put together complex relationships to allow Jesus to be born into the family of Jesse. In 2 Samuel 7:12-16, the Lord had promised King David that:
He would establish the house of King David forever (2 Sam 7:16; Acts 2:30).
Therefore, we see that Jesus was born to fulfil the promise of God to keep the dynasty of David forever.
Prayer: Lord, you are faithful to your word. Help me to remain faithful to you and that I may be a man who keeps my word to people.
