Topic: “INTIMACY BREEDS INTIMACY”

Text:1 Samuel 18:1-5; 19:1-7

Memory Verse: “After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as much as himself.” 1 Sam 18:1.

People who love God and are in an intimate relationship with him find it easy to be attracted to others of like mind. This was the case of David and Jonathan the son of King Saul. When the two young men met, they became close friends at once. There was a quick attraction of their spirits because they both had a strong commitment to God. They both loved and feared God and had an intimate relationship with Him. They were both known to be concerned about pleasing God above self and other things. Our text for today says they were of the same spirit. This became the bedrock of their friendship, which is described as one of the closest and deepest recorded in the Bible.

David and Jonathan were not only committed to God, but also to each other. They sought the wellbeing of each other and protected each other even at the expense of personal benefit. They would not allow anything or anyone to come between them, not even career or family members. They drew closer together even when their friendship was tested and rather than break off from each other, they stuck together more closely as friends to the end. Though Jonathan the son of the king later realised that David, and not he would be the next king 1 Sam 23:17, that did not weaken his love and commitment to David. He would much rather lose the throne of Israel than lose his intimate friend.

Do you want to enjoy the kind of intimacy David and Jonathan had with your spouse or other friends? You must first give your heart to the Lord and get intimately close to Him. When you do this, He will give you His kind of heart and help you build intimacy with people who will bless you. Like David and Jonathan, you must develop a completely selfless and secure heart so that you may attract people of like minds with you,

PRAYER: Ask God to bring or lead you to your Jonathan, one with whom you can share true intimacy.
