Topic: “GOD’S PROMISE IS PERSONAL“
Text: Genesis 15:1–6
Memory Verse: “And he brought him outside and said, ‘Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” Genesis 15:6
The Lord God Almighty has consistently revealed Himself as a promise keeper. God’s promises are supernatural and enduring. Abraham set out on a journey of faith with God. In his journey, he went through a lot of ups and downs. Today’s text highlights another low point in the life of Abraham.
In our text for today, we meet Abram at a point where his heart slows and ripples with doubt and fear. This is not uncommon in human experience following strenuous victories. Elijah suffered similar effects after his victory over the priests of Baal at Mt. Carmel, even fleeing to the wilderness and asking God, “just let me die” (cf. 1 Kings 18, 19). Abram was tired, fearful, and despondent. Humanly speaking, Abram had reasons to fear for his future; who would carry on his legacy? It was during this that the Lord responded to him: “After these events the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision” (v. 1a). Not a dream, but a vision. Visions in Scripture are for the purpose of communicating the word of God. Abram had a vision in the night, but what he saw was not as important as what he heard: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield; your reward will be very great” (v. 1).
The Lord promises protection and provision to Abraham. Three times previously, God had promised Abram a multitude of descendants; initially when he called him in Ur (12:2). However, now God is saying something brand new; He is giving Abram a new insight, an unveiling of His profound and incomprehensible plan. A son from his own body would be his heir. The heir would be his biological son. Surely, Abram was rocked and captivated by this new insight from God.
As we step out today, like Abraham, let us be fully persuaded. Be fully persuaded that God has the power to do what he has promised. Abram fully persuaded you to be persuaded. Are you fully persuaded that God has the power to do what he has promised? Today’s devotional is about God persuading us that he can and he will keep his promises. God affirms alignment with promises.
PRAYER: Our Father, we thank you that you are a promise keeper. Lord help us not to doubt you, but to trust you despite the delays we experience in Jesus’ name, Amen.
