In our Christian journey, we cannot remain truly intimate without a heart of forgiveness. Offenses will come. When we choose to forgive, we rebuild broken bridges. God calls us to reconcile just as He reconciled us to Himself.
In 2017, a shooting tragedy took place at The First Baptist Church, Texas, US. Kelley a discharged Air force veteran, opened fire on the congregation during service. At the end of the shooting, 26 people were killed and 22 wounded. It was one of the most tragic church shootings in US history. After some months of healing, the families of the victims held a TV conference. One by one they stepped forward and declared that they had forgiven Kelley because this is what Christ expects of them. It was an emotional moment that brought tears into the eyes of many.
When we forgive as Christ forgave us, we open the door for restoration and peace, not just with others, but also within us. True intimacy cannot thrive in a heart that harbors resentment (Eph 4:31-32). The call to deeper fellowship requires intentional steps toward others, letting love guide our words and actions in our relationship with them.
Practice It: If there’s someone you have been avoiding in church because of how they have hurt or disappointed you, reach out with a spirit of reconciliation.
PRAYER: Father, please grant me grace to overcome bitterness. Grant me the courage to seek peace where there has been distance and to restore what has been broken. Let my relationships reflect the mercy and healing power of Your love in the name of Jesus, Amen.
