TOPIC: “THINKING YOU ARE TOO SMART TO BE CORRECTED – 2”
TEXT: 1 Kings 12:1-20
MEMORY VERSE: “Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil”. Proverbs 3:7.
The power of a man’s mind directs his course. No one goes contrary to what he thinks or agrees with. We shall continue to examine and highlight the lessons from the story of King Rehoboam.
Story Insight #2: Pride made him fulfil a bad prophesy that had been spoken before he was born. One decision he made in pride and arrogance pushed him into a trap waiting for him, which he could have escaped if he had decided with wisdom. 1 Kings 12:24.
Lesson 2: Do not take the people (followers) for granted. They can surprise you as a leader if you do.
Everyone has a mindpower that determines what they can do per time. It will be wrong to take people for granted especially when they are free to make their choices. No one who is a wise thinker can control the way people will react to him or her. People can change from being good and nice to you if they do not feel accepted by you any longer. They can choose to walk away just as they can choose to come close.
Never take people’s goodwill and good hearts for granted. The consequences can be grave. Wise believers will listen when good counsel is given to them and when they are corrected. The counsel taken or rejected will benefit the counselee much more than the counselor.
King Rehoboam’s decision did not only have an immediate repercussion, but it also fulfilled a bad prophecy. The devil is always going about seeking whom he may devour. (1pet. 5:8) The possibility of being devoured by the devil depends on the availability of the prey (person who allows him). The devil seeks opportunity to bring destruction to people through pride. Fight pride by staying humble and giving listening ears. (prov. 16:18)
PRAYER: Lord Jesus, I will not fall into the trap of pride and be blind to my own mistakes. Help me to never to fulfil a negative prophecy in Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
