Topic: “The Joy of the Lord in Worship”
Text: Nehemiah 8:1-10
Memory Verse: “Nehemiah said, ‘Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is sacred to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.’” – Nehemiah 8:10
In Nehemiah 8, the people of Israel had just heard the reading of the Law, and their hearts were convicted. However, Nehemiah reminded them that worshiping God was not a reason for sorrow, but for joy. The joy of the Lord, found in His presence, is what strengthens us in times of weakness and discouragement. Worship invites us into God’s presence, where we experience His love, peace, and joy.
When we come before God in worship, it transforms our hearts and renews our strength. The act of praising God, reflecting on His goodness and acknowledging His greatness lifts our spirits and brings joy to our hearts. It is a joy that transcends circumstances, because it is rooted in the unchanging goodness of God.
The joy that comes from worship is not based on fleeting emotions or temporary situations. It is the strength that comes from knowing that God is with us and that His joy empowers us to face anything that comes our way. This joy is a feeling of good pleasure that is dependent on who Jesus is rather than on who we are or what is happening around us.
Habakkuk explained this kind of joy in Habakkuk 3:17-19, which says, “Though the fig tree does not bud and there is no grape on the vines, though the olive crop fails, and the fields produce no food, though there is no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls. Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Saviour. The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he enables me to tread on the heights”.
Take a moment today to reflect on the joy that worship brings into your life. Even in difficult moments, choose to praise God and allow His joy to strengthen you.
PRAYER: Father, thank You for the joy that comes from being in Your presence. Help me to find strength and encouragement in worship, knowing that Your joy is my strength. May my heart always be filled with joy as I worship You, Amen.
