Topic: THE BLESSING OF MENTORSHIP
Text: Joshua 1: 1 – 9
Memory Verse: “And the Lord spoke unto Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. And he turned again into the camp; but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle.” Ex. 33: 11
Upon the death of Moses, the Lord called to Joshua to take on the leadership of Israel, promising him that as he was with Moses, he would be with him. He encouraged him to be strong and of good courage and advised him not to let the Book of the Law, depart out of his mouth in order for him to be prosperous and have good success.
Joshua immediately commanded the officers to prepare to cross over the Jordan, upon hearing the instruction from the Lord; believing that He would be with him as He had been with Moses.
One could ask: ‘What gave such a young man the confidence to take over the leadership of Israel?’. It was the excellent mentoring that Moses gave him. Recall that Joshua was his servant and was close by in the various encounters that Moses had with the Lord and the stiff-necked people he was leading. He had seen firsthand the challenges, the opposition and obstacles the children of Israel gave Moses, but he had also witnessed the mighty delivering power of God available to Moses for him to overcome.
In our memory verse today, we are told that God spoke to Moses face to face as a friend and after talking with the Lord, he left the tabernacle and went back to the camp but left Joshua, his servant, in the tabernacle. This shows us that Joshua was with Moses in his dialogue with the Lord, a very useful experience in building faith and confidence in the Lord that would subsequently shape his life.
Moses mentored Joshua so well that, he was successful in his assignment of leading Israel into the Promised Land.
