Topic: “SACRIFICIAL LOVE PERSONIFIED”

Text: ISAIAH 53:1-12

Memory Verse: “He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrow, and familiar with suffering…” – Isa 53:3

This chapter of the prophecy of Isaiah is a description of the “suffering servant”. This term “servant” is used here to refer to the Messiah, our Lord Jesus Christ. He would be highly exalted because of His sacrifice for the redemption of mankind. He was to be marred beyond human likeness; but through His suffering He would cleanse the nations and reconcile them to God (Heb 10:14; I Pet 1:2).

Who would have believed that God would choose to save the world through a humble, suffering servant rather than a glorious king? This is quite contrary to human thoughts, pride, and worldly ways. However, God often works in ways that are contrary to our expectation because He is not man; the strength of the suffering servant is in His humility, suffering and mercy. He maintained this humble profile until He had fulfilled the purpose of God in His coming to earth. James 4:6 tells us that God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Since the Messiah lived a humble life, He continued to attract the grace of God to the very end of His assignment on earth.

Paul described true love as not being boastful, proud or self-serving – 1 Cor. 13:4-5. In putting up the posture of humility, the suffering servant demonstrated love not in word, but in His person. He personified the message of God’s love for humanity and proclaimed it through His life.

This is a solid example for all who want to follow Jesus and serve God. Think about how you can embody the sacrificial love of God by living sacrificially.

PRAYER: Lord, help me to clothe myself with your humility as I show your sacrificial love to all around me, Amen.
