SEPTEMBER 19: “GUARD YOUR HEART AGAINST GREED”

DATE: Saturday 19  September  2026

TOPIC:  “GUARD YOUR HEART AGAINST GREED”

TEXT: Luke 12:15

MEMORY VERSE:  “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions” – Luke 12:15 (NIV).

There is a quiet paradox in this scripture. Jesus says that life is not defined by possessions, yet the world we live in, measures a person’s worth by what they have. A man is often respected based on the car he drives, the clothes he wears and the lifestyle he displays.

But is that truly life?

In the book The Psychology of Money, there is an interesting thought that when people see a nice car, they rarely admire the driver. Instead, they admire the car, the design, the color, the status it represents. What they really think is how that possession will make them feel or how it will make others see them; and that is where the trap begins.

What we often call “ambition” can quietly become greed. The constant desire for more can shift our focus from purpose to possession. We begin to accumulate things, not because we need them, but because we want validation, status, or recognition.

However, these “additional liabilities,” as we may call them, rarely bring fulfillment. Instead, they can lead to pride, comparison and a false sense of identity.

Jesus’ warning is clear: watch out. This means greed is not always obvious. It is subtle. It creeps in unnoticed and before long, it begins to shape our desires and decisions.

So, we must pause and ask ourselves: What am I craving? Do I truly need it, or do I just want to be seen with it?

True life is not found in what we own, but in who we are becoming in Christ.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, help me to discern between my wants and my needs. Teach me to see clearly and to find my identity in You, not in possessions, Amen.
