Topic: “THE FALLEN HERO: SAUL”

Text: 1 Samuel 15:10-28

Memory Verse: “To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.” – 1 Samuel 15:22b (NIV).

King Saul was chosen and anointed by God to lead Israel (1 Samuel 10:1). He was chosen by God’s act of mercy and providence for a great task among the Israelites. He had his feet on the path of greatness, but he disappointed God and fell short of God’s expectation over His life through disobedience. In 1 Samuel 15, God instructed Saul to destroy the Amalekites, but he partially obeyed even though he killed all the people, he spared King Agag and the best of the Amalekites’ livestock. Most unfortunately, when confronted by Prophet Samuel, Saul justified his actions rather than repenting (1 Samuel 15:20-21). This act of disobedience cost him his throne.

Saul allowed pride, fear of people, and self-will to override God’s command. Instead of trusting in God, he relied on his reasoning and sought human approval (1 Samuel 15:24). His repeated failures, including offering an unlawful sacrifice (1 Samuel 13:8-14), revealed a disobedient heart to God’s instruction. Eventually, God rejected Saul as king (1 Samuel 15:26), and his life ended in despair (1 Samuel 31:4-6).

The story of Saul warns us that every act of disobedience is a grievous sin against God and attracts devastating consequence. When we choose our ways over God’s, we risk losing His favor and purpose for our lives. Sin, when not repented of, leads to separation from God and ultimate destruction (Romans 6:23). However, we can learn from Saul’s mistake by walking in humility and complete obedience to God’s word.

Beloved in Christ, are there areas of your life where you are struggling to fully obey God? Or are you like Saul, giving God partial obedience? I want to counsel you by the word of God to repent today because further delay in obeying God may be risky.

PRAYER: Lord, help me to obey you completely. Remove every pride, fear, and self-will that hinders my walk with you, Amen.
