Topic: SENSITIVITY TO GOD’S VOICE
Text: 1 Samuel 3:1-10
Memory Verse: I Samuel 3:10 – “The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”
One truth that is sacrosanct is that God speaks, and we can hear His voice as believers. As we hear our earthly fathers speak to us, so also God desires to speak to us. He wants to instruct and direct us in the different situations and circumstances of our lives. He is both interested in the weighty matters and the minutest details of our lives. This is the fundamental truth that every child of God must come to know. This is evidenced in the Scriptures. It is indeed a great privilege to be His child. However, even though God desires to speak to us, He doesn’t force Himself on us. He speaks only to those who want to hear Him speak to them.
In the scripture we read, we see the little boy Samuel grew under the tutelage of Prophet Eli. Obviously, the boy Samuel had never heard God speak to him before to the extent that when God was calling him, to speak with him; he thought it was Eli’s voice he was hearing. He went to Eli three times, until Eli told him to respond “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening”. What a response! When God heard this response, He began to speak to Samuel. Until we assume this posture of a servant who is always ready to listen to God’s voice, we may not hear Him speak to us. This is very crucial for us as believers.
No man can hear God without his readiness to listen to Him and until God sees this readiness, He will not begin to speak. As believers, it is important to always tune your spiritual ears to listen to God. ‘Speak Lord, for your servant heareth’ must always be both the positioning of our heart and our prayer.
