Topic: DOING GOOD TO ALL – Submitting to Authority
Text: Romans 13:1-7, Titus 3:1-2, 1 Peter 2:13-17
Memory Verse: Romans 13:1 (NKJV): “Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.”
As followers of our Lord and Saviour, we are called to do good to all people, including those in positions of authority over us. Whether it’s our parents, teachers, bosses, or government leaders, we are called to submit to their authority and show them respect.
Romans 13:1-7 tells us that all authority is instituted by God and that those in positions of authority have been placed there by Him. Therefore, when we submit to authority, we are ultimately submitting to God. This means that we should obey the laws of our land, pay our taxes, and show respect to those in leadership positions.
Titus 3:1-2 reminds us that we should be “ready to do whatever is good” and to “slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle toward everyone.” This includes those in authority over us.
1 Peter 2:13-17 emphasizes the importance of submitting to earthly authorities as a way to honour God. We are called to live as “free people,” but not to use our freedom as an excuse to do wrong. Instead, we are to “show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, and honour the emperor.”
In a world that often values rebellion and disobedience, submitting to authority may not always be popular. However, as Christians, we are called to a higher standard. We are called to do good to all people, including those in positions of authority over us.
Prayer: Dear God, we thank you for placing those in positions of authority over us. Help us to submit to their authority and show them respect. Help us to be people who are ready to do whatever is good and to show proper respect to everyone. May we use our freedom to honour you and serve others. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
