Topic: “THE WISE MEN’S GIFTS: SYMBOLISM AND SIGNIFICANCE “
Text: Matthew 2:1-11
Memory Verse: “And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Christ with Mary, His mother and fell down and worshipped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him; gold, frankincense and, myrrh” – Matt 2:11.
The gifts presented by the wise men to the Lord Jesus at His birth in Matt 2:11 hold profound and symbolic meaning. Today, let us remind ourselves of these gifts and their symbolic meaning:
- Gold: representing royalty and K This gift acknowledges the Lord Jesus as the King of kings and the Lord of lords – Ps 72:10-11.
- Frankincense: symbolizing His divinity and priesthood. Recognising Jesus as God incarnate and High Priest. Lev. 2:1-2, Rev. 8:3-4.
- Myrrh: the gift of Myrrh was a pointer to His suffering and death. Underscoring the Lord’s sacrificial mission on earth. Ps 69:21, John 19:39.
These gifts from the wise men reveal their understanding of our Lord’s identity and mission while here on earth and afterwards, fulfilling Old Testament prophecies. Gold signifies the Lord Jesus’ royal lineage, frankincense, His divine and priestly nature, and myrrh, His exiting pain and suffering at the Cross.
The biblical significance is in the sense that the wise men’s gifts demonstrate their reverence and worship for our Lord, acknowledging His divinity, priesthood and kingship. As we reflect on these gifts, let also be reminded of the depth of God’s love and the significance of Jesus’ birth.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, may we offer our lives unto you daily, wholly and intimately in Jesus’ name, Amen.
