JANUARY 29: “LEGACY OF FAITH”

The Christian life is a life of following. When Jesus was on the earth, he said, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” (Matthew 16:24). However, it is not only Christ that we follow. We follow other godly leaders who lead us in the way of Christ. One of such is Abraham, the father of faith.

In our text for today, Paul mentioned Abraham as a man who left a legacy of faith that we can all emulate. What did he do? Paul mentioned that “He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;” He lived so well that this chapter has been all about Abraham. He is mentioned by name some seven times. Paul uses a pronoun (he/him/you) another 26 times to refer to Abraham.

What are the lessons we can learn from Abraham’s faith? First is that Abraham, was an example of faith life, but was he perfect, no, but we see him perfectly forgiven, always moving on. He never allowed challenges or his shortcomings to cut him off from God.

Secondly, we see that Abraham did not “stagger.” This means he did not forget God’s Promise. In another sense, it means he did not withdraw from or move away from God. Today, as we step out into the world, our faith will be challenged, or our resolve is going to be tested, but we must make up our minds like Job, who said in Job 13:15 that “Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him.” As children of God, these are the kind of people we should follow, because they have left us a strong legacy of faith to follow. Remember that Abraham’s faith became a model for all.

PRAYER: Our Father, we thank you that in the name of Jesus, no unbelief will make us waver concerning your promises through Christ, but instead, we will grow strong in our faith, as we give you glory in all things daily, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
