Topic: BEARING GOD’S PRESENCE – HONORING GOD WITH OUR WORDS
Text: Ephesians 4:29 – 32 (NIV)
Memory Verse: Eph.4:29 – “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”
Words have incredible power—they can build up or tear down, heal or hurt. As followers of Christ, we are called to speak in a way that reflects God’s righteousness. Ephesians 4:29 challenges us to avoid unwholesome talk and instead use our words to edify and benefit others. Righteous speech is vital to honoring God in all we do.
Jesus taught that our words are a reflection of what is in our hearts (Matthew 12:34). Regularly examine your heart and seek God’s help to cultivate purity, love, and kindness within. A heart hungry for godly values will naturally produce righteous speech.
Intentionally consider the potential impact of your words before you speak. Ask yourself if what you are about to say is true, kind, relevant, or helpful. Being intentional can prevent harmful words from slipping out in moments of frustrating anger. Make it a habit to speak words of encouragement and affirmation. Look for opportunities to build others up, offering support and love. Simple acts of kindness through words can have a profound effect on those around you.
Steer clear of gossip, slander, and negative talk. Instead, focus on speaking truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). If a conversation turns negative, gently steer it back to a more positive and edifying direction. Consider any moments where you might have spoken hastily or harshly and consider how you improve your speech to better reflect God’s righteousness?
PRAYER: Eternal Father, help me to use my words to honor You and to build up those around me. Give me wisdom to know when to speak and when to listen, and the self-control to avoid unwholesome talk, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
