Topic: “INTIMACY IN HUMILITY IN THE CHURCH“
Text: 1 Peter 5:5-7
Memory Verse: “John 13:14 – “If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.”
Humility is one of the virtues, if not the greatest virtue in the Church. It can be said to be the very foundational character upon which the Christian faith was birthed, charting the path for spiritual growth and development and an intimate relationship with God. He wants us to have the same relationship we have with Him with each other. This can only be achieved when we set pride aside and relate with one another in humility. This is essential for intimacy in our relationships. James 4:6 says God resists the proud. Pride is the opposite of humility. If God abhors pride, then only the humble can have an intimate relationship with Him. Jesus Christ His Son did.
It was in humility that Christ surrendered Himself unto death. Though He was God, He did not consider Himself equal to God, but took the form of a bondservant (Philippians 2:5-7), who, in obedience to the Father, willingly took the burden of our sins upon Himself and bore the punishment for the sins of the world, though He had no sin.
What are the characteristics of humility? Some of the characteristics of humility are: patience, having a forgiving spirit, accepting responsibility for wrongdoing, acknowledging mistakes, having respect for others, gratitude, recognizing your limitation, avoiding being class conscious, submission to God’s will, recognizing the need for God, etc.
Humility is not self-degradation, neither is it a manifestation of low self-esteem. It is a virtue that fuels Intimacy in relationships.
PRAYER: Father, You give grace to the humble. Please give me the grace for humility in Jesus’ name, Amen.
