Topic:  “INTIMACY IN MENTORING

Text: Titus 2:1-10

Memory Verse:  “Titus 2:3-4 – “the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things — that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children,”

A mentor, dictionary defines, is ‘a wise and trusted counselor or teacher.” There is no doubt that such is needed in the church today as it was in the days of the apostles. When you look around you, what do you see in the youth of today? Good behavioral patterns, comportment, chastity, respect for elders, godly home and family, trustworthiness, openness and many more of such are fast dwindling. The youth, rather than going out there to bring people to Christ, are being influenced by the outside world and bringing such influences into the church.

This was what Paul saw happening when he admonished Titus to speak things that are proper for sound doctrine. There is no doubt that sound doctrine is preached and taught in NEBC, however, there are doctrines being taught out in the world by social media etc. which our youth are exposed to. In as much as it is good to listen to sound messages from our pastors and teachers, it is needful that there be a medium where there can be a close interaction between the young and the old where the old is expected to mentor the young using their personal and other experiences of life and the scripture. The end result is to see marital issues, bad behavioral patterns and ungodly behaviors reduce if not completely eliminated. This can be achieved when the mentor-mentee relationship is cultivated and developed in godly intimacy.

Although the above illustration uses the old versus the young, a mentor-mentee relationship cuts across age. The idea is for the stronger to teach the weaker. Look around you again. Is there anyone you see that you can influence for Christ? Begin to see it as your responsibility to see the church filled with men, women and children of good standing. Prayerfully consider and make a move to begin a mentor-mentee relationship with that person. You can begin by regular greetings, asking after the person’s work, school or family life.

PRAYER: Father, I yield myself to You for Your use. Connect me to my mentee and if I am the one in need of a mentor, please connect me likewise in Jesus’ name, Amen.
