TOPIC: “EXAMINE YOURSELF”
TEXT: 2 Corinthians 13:5-10
MEMORY VERSE: “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test?” – 2 Corinthians 13:5.
The subject of self-examination is very critical to the life of a Christian. This self-examination has to do with a daily reflection of your entire life – your thoughts and action – to actually check if they align with the will of the Father.
Just the way it is necessary to carry out a routine medical check-up to ensure that the vital organs/parts of our body are functioning well, so it is with our spiritual walk with God. There is a need for consistent check of the state of our relationship with God. Why do we need this constant spiritual check-up? It is because there is a tendency to deviate from the standards of the Lord if we are not careful. Remember that we are in this world, but we are not of this world. It takes intentionality to remain on track.
From our passage, the Corinthians were called to examine and test themselves to see if they were really Christians. Just as we get physical check-ups, Paul urges us to give ourselves spiritual check-ups. Let us use the word of God as a mirror to see if our lives align daily. You must evaluate your fruit. Are you really exhibiting the fruit of the Spirit in your life (Galatians 5:22-23)? Do you still feel the pricking of the Holy Spirit in your inside whenever you go against His will? Is Christ at the centre of your decisions?
Scripture calls you to examine yourself to see whether you are still in the faith. That requires a daily reflection on your actions and attitude before God and with people you relate. Study the scriptures to keep you focused on Christ, especially scriptures that will bring you humbly before the throne of our God like Psalm 139:23-24; Psalm 37, etc.
When we become very intentional in examining our lives, it will help us to be at peace with God and also help us relate well with our fellow men. Envy and jealousy will therefore no longer be an issue for us.
Today, make up your mind to do a frequent examination of your spiritual life and your relationship with people and determine to always follow what the Lord tells you to do as you study and meditate on His word
PRAYER: Holy Spirit, help me to always lay myself bare before you. Grant me the grace to always reflect on my life through your word and obey what you tell me to do, Amen.
