Topic: Benefits of God’s Presence – COMFORT
Text: Reading: Psalm 23: 1-6
Memory Verse: “Even though I walk through the darkest valley. I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. Ps. 23: 4 NIV
The Shepherd’s rod is primarily a defensive weapon. Shepherds protect their flock by hurling this short, thick stick at an attacking beast or thief. David knew how to be the protector, but he also knew what it is like to be the one in distress. He found comfort and preservation in God’s promises. ” this is my comfort in my affliction, that Your word has revived me and preserved me alive” (Psalm 119:50).
The staff is a long stick with a hook or crook at one end. Although it has multiple uses, its mostly a tool for correction. If a sheep starts to go stray, the staff gently directs him back to the path, pulling him closer to the shepherd and to other sheep. And when sheep are in distress on the edge of a cliff, the shepherd lifts them to safety with the comfort of his staff.
The LORD comforts us and corrects us as the shepherd does to the sheep. Just remember that His presence include not only His protection, but also His correction. As we walk by faith, we discover that the rod and the staff are both for our correction and comfort in the hands of Jesus, the Good Shepherd.
Prayer: Dear Father, I surrender to Your lordship, Your comfort is all I need through Jesus Christ I pray. Amen.
