TOPIC: “EMBRACING SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINE”
TEXT: 1 Corinthians 9:24-27
MEMORY VERSE: “Therefore, I run accordingly, not uncertainly; I fight accordingly, and not like someone who beats the air” – I Cor. 9:26.
Every believer in Christ is called to live a life of spiritual discipline, thus, placing their relationship with God above every other thing else. In today’s devotional text, Paul uses the metaphor of a race to illustrate the importance of self-control and perseverance in our walk with God. In verse 24, he says, “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.”
In the above passage, Apostle Paul emphasizes the need for focus and determination in our spiritual journey. Just as an athlete trains rigorously to win a prize, so must every believer prioritize their spiritual growth and development in order to achieve the ultimate goal, which is knowing and pleasing God. Reminding believers again of the need to engage in a life-long pursuit of God, the apostle continues, “Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever” (1 Cor. 9:25).
Beloved, as a believer, your discipline and self-control will determine your progress in the journey. By embracing spiritual disciplines such as prayer, fasting, quiet time with God, bible study, etc., you cultivate the habit that brings you closer to God. When you are spiritually disciplined, you are no longer controlled by your emotions and circumstances but are rather driven by your desire to know God better. Corroborating this spiritual truth, Paul writes “Therefore, I do not run like someone running aimlessly, I do not fight like a boxer beating the air” (1 Cor. 9: 26).
PRAYER: Dear Heavenly Father, help me to fully embrace spiritual discipline as I continue in this spiritual journey with you in Jesus’ name, Amen.
