MAY 18“THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT”

The concept of covenant is central to the biblical narrative. A covenant is a binding agreement between two parties, often sealed with a sacrifice or a symbolic act. In this case, the blood of the covenant serves as a visible representation of God’s promise to be Israel’s God, and Israel’s commitment to obey Him.

In our devotional text for today, Moses sprinkled the blood of the covenant on the people of Israel, sealing their commitment to God. This act was a pivotal moment in the history of God’s people, marking the beginning of a new covenant between God and Israel.

Hebrews 9:15-22 further provides insight into the significance of the blood of the covenant. The unknown author of the book of Hebrews explains that a will or covenant becomes valid only when someone dies. In this context, the death of the animal whose blood was shed serves as a guarantee of the covenant.

The blood of the covenant represents several key aspects of God’s relationship with Israel; first, God’s promise: the blood of the covenant symbolizes God’s promise to be Israel’s God and to provide for their needs. Second, Israel’s commitment: the blood of the covenant also represents Israel’s commitment to obey God and follow His commands. Third, atonement and forgiveness: the shedding of blood serves as a reminder of the need for atonement and forgiveness, which is ultimately fulfilled in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Fourth, the new covenant: the blood of the new covenant pointed forward to the new covenant established through the blood of Jesus Christ, which provides a permanent and perfect atonement for sin. Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross is the fulfillment of the Old Covenant.

PRAYER: Heavenly father, thank you for the blood of the covenant, which represents your promise and commitment to your people. Help me to understand the significance of the blood and its fulfillment in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, Amen.
