Topic: “THE PROVISION OF ANIMAL BLOOD FOR SACRIFICE”
Text: Leviticus 1:1-4
Memory Verse: “… And he shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt offering; and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him” (Lev. 2:4).
Today’s devotional passage provides insight into the provision of animal blood for sacrifice. Our text describes the burnt offering, where a worshipper would bring an animal, typically a bull, sheep, or goat, to the priest. The animal was to be without defect, symbolizing the perfection required for atonement. The worshipper would lay their hands on the animal’s head, signifying the transfer of their sin to the animal. The priest would then slaughter the animal, and its blood would be sprinkled on the altar.
This act symbolized the cleansing and consecration of the people, as well as the altar for worship. For example, Exodus 29:10-14 describes the consecration of Aaron and his sons as priests. As part of the ritual, a ram was sacrificed, and its blood was applied to the altar and the priests.
Our text highlights the following: First, is God’s provision. God’s provision of a system of sacrifice to atone for sin tells of His desire for reconciliation with humanity. When mankind sinned, God did not see him as an enemy; He did not cast him out of His presence forever. Rather, he created an avenue for reconciliation, thus, bringing man back to Himself for fellowship.
Second, is substitutionary atonement. The death of an animal any time atonement is made on behalf a sinner serves as a substitution for the sinner-worshipper’s death, illustrating the concept of substitutionary atonement. In the Old Testament, an animal had to die the death of a sinner so that the sinner can live. Third, it is the death of the animal as man’s substitute that brought the sinner life and forgiveness from God.
These sacrifices were temporary and imperfect, foreshadowing the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ. His blood which was shed on the cross provides the perfect and permanent atonement for our sins.
PRAYER: Heavenly father, thank you for providing a system of sacrifice to atone for our sins. Help us to fully comprehend its significance in your redemption plan through Christ, Amen.
