Topic: “THE NECESSITY OF BLOOD SACRIFICE”
Text: Hebrews 9: 19-22
Memory Verse: “In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness” Heb 19:22.
Today’s devotional passage highlights the fundamental role of blood sacrifice in the biblical narrative. In Leviticus 17:11, we see that blood is the medium through which atonement is made. Although the concept of blood sacrifice may seem archaic or even barbaric to modern sensibilities, in the biblical context, it was a necessary aspect of worship and atonement. The shedding of blood represented the ultimate sacrifice, thus, demonstrating the gravity of sin and the cost of forgiveness.
Without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness. This statement is not just a theological concept, but a fundamental principle of biblical worldview. The blood of animals, and ultimately the blood of Jesus Christ was required to atone for humanity’s sins.
The necessity of blood sacrifice is a perfect reminder of these powerful truths; first, that sin is serious. The shedding of blood underscores the gravity of sin and its consequences. Second, that forgiveness of sin is costly. The requirement of blood sacrifice demonstrates that the forgiveness of sin is not cheap. It takes the life of a living thing (an animal) in the Old Testament for sins to be forgiven. Third, that God is holy. The need for blood sacrifice also highlights God’s holiness and desire for justice and righteousness.
As we reflect on the inevitability of blood sacrifice, let us remember the seriousness of sin, and the cost of forgiveness. This will enable to us approach the throne of God with reverence and gratitude, acknowledging the precious blood of Jesus Christ that secured our redemption.
PRAYER: Heavenly father, thank you for the sacrifice of your Son Jesus Christ. Help me to always approach you with reverence and gratitude, acknowledging the precious blood of Christ that secured redemption for me, Amen!
