NOVEMBER 17: “INGRATITUDE – THE WHY?”

Chorus: All I have is given to me by the Lord, All I have is given to me by Jesus.

Why are people ungrateful? I cannot really think of a ready answer for this, but we can put up some guesses: Could it be that they did not value the gift, or mercies received? Could it be that they do not appreciate the methodology, the atmosphere, or the personality of the giver? Alternatively, could it be that they have other priorities to address rather than being grateful? Could it be that they just forgot?

I am sure this is not an exhaustive list, but it gives us an idea of some of the reasons that human beings may give to be ungrateful. Whether those reasons are justifiable is another issue entirely.

I will like us to consider two other reasons why people may be ungrateful:
Having a “sense of entitlement” and
“Taking things for granted or making excuses”.

They may appear similar, but they are not the same. The first one feels “I am entitled to” it anyway so why should I say thank you. The other just feels like we receive it all the time so do we need to thank God especially for them. For example, God made the two great lights: The Sun in the day and the Moon at night. They help to provide light for man during the day and the night. Do not forget that without these lights, the earth would be in darkness. Have you thought for a second that if God were to remove these lights that the world would be in total darkness and nothing would function properly? God does this 24 hours a day and 365 days a year and this is one great mercies we have received from God. Do we then take them for granted because they happen regularly? Then why do we say we do not need to thank God for them?

PRAYER: Please take a moment to appreciate God for providing light for the world to illuminate us. Ask the Holy Spirit to illuminate your heart and eyes to enable you see Him more clearly.
