NOVEMBER 6: “THANKING GOD FOR HIS MERCIES”

Topic: “THANKING GOD FOR HIS MERCIES

Text: Psalm 136

Memory Verse: “Psalm 136:1 – “O give thanks unto the Lord for he is good for his mercy endureth forever”.

I love reading Psalm 136. It is a catalogue of the great and mighty things that God did in the lives of the Israelites for which they are enjoined to give thanks. There are 26 verses in the Psalm and 26 admonitions to give thanks to God. This means one admonition for each verse. Have you ever sat down to catalogue the great works that the Lord has done in your life? From your waking up every day to your going to bed at the setting of the sun and how He has preserved your body and soul over the years?

A continuous refrain in the psalm is that His mercy endureth forever. His mercy has endured for you from the day of your birth until today. We should never see the continuous repetition of “for His mercy endureth forever” as a vain repetition. Instead, among other things, it should point us to the fact that in every particular favour, we ought to take notice of the mercy of God and in every situation, we find ourselves. Further, that His mercy never has a beginning nor an end, it endures for all times.

The duty we are called repeatedly to carry out is to give thanks always in all situations. Can we ever give thanks enough? Whom should we give thanks? To Him who gives us life and from whom we receive all good things. The Lord plenteous in mercy, Jehovah the God of Israel, the God of gods, the Sovereign of all sovereigns. We must give thanks to God for the excellency of His power and love. He alone does great wonders.

We must thank Him also for His wisdom and grace. Wisdom with which He created the earth, the sun, the moon and the stars. We breathe in air we do not know where it is coming from. He made the earth fit for the habitation of human beings can you take time off this morning to thank the Lord for His mercies that endure forever.

PRAYER: Father, I thank you for being my all in all. You have been a merciful God all the days of my life, and your mercies endure until today. Praise be to your Holy name.
