Topic: “GOD’S LOVE IN THE PENTATEUCH”
Text: DEUTERONOMY 7:6-11
Memory Verse: Deuteronomy 7:7 – “The Lord did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any other people, for you were the least of all peoples.”
God’s love is part of the communicable attributes of God, in which He has called us to share. God’s love as defined by Wayne Grudem means that, “God eternally gives of Himself to others” from eternity to eternity. The intent of God’s love is self-giving for the benefits of others. All He has ever done and all that He will ever do is motivated by love to bring about blessings, peace, favour and goodness to others. This attribute helps us to trust safely and confidently that whatever the LORD does is for our good.
The Pentateuch, or the first five books of the Bible, lays the foundation of God’s relationship with humanity. Central to this relationship is God’s steadfast love, which is unwavering and eternal. Every page we turn from Genesis 1 reveals God’s love; from Creation through the Fall and the Flood, then to the rise of Abraham all the way to the Captivity in Egypt and the great Deliverance from slavery. The children of Israel enjoyed so much love and God made it clear in Deuteronomy 7:7-9 that His faithfulness and His enduring covenant of love to them was by grace.
How have you experienced God’s faithful love in your own life? When was the last time you specially thanked God for His enduring love in your life? What does it mean to you that God’s love extends to a thousand generations? As we journey through the Pentateuch, we will explore various expressions of this divine love, from creation to the establishment of a Covenant People.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your faithful love that spans generations. Help me to see Your love clearly as I study the Pentateuch. May I be ever mindful of Your covenant and strive to love You and keep Your commandments in Jesus’ name, Amen.
