TOPIC: “THE SPIRIT OF LUST”
TEXT: 1John 2:16, Colossians 3:1-6
MEMORY VERSE: “For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world” – 1 John 2:16 NIV.
Lust is an insatiable desire, not one you can control because it feeds on the things you want. It identifies a need or desire that is already within you and capitalises on it. If the desire is not there, lust will not be born.
So why not just kill the desire, right? If you kill the desire, you destroy it at the source. However, it does not work that way. Certain desires are inbuilt by God. The devil cannot create, so he corrupts and therefore introduces lust to certain God given designs.
One wrong mindset we have been given, often by the older generations, is that feeling these desires in themselves is wrong. But it is not. It is inbuilt into the very nature of man—God put it there. Yet, we have grown up feeling like these desires are abominations and that as a child of God, you have no right to feel this way at all. Let us correct that wrong notion today.
There are common desires that overtake the heart of man. The first things that come to mind are sex, power (which also includes money), influence, or recognition. These are the three things that rule the world—the three things that command respect, the three things that all men chase after.
The ability to control or direct the affairs of people through sex, power and influence, be it as a woman or a man; the idea that, as a man, you can have any woman you want, or as a woman, you can have any man eating out of your hands is alluring.
We spend a lot of time trying to kill what may never die rather than understanding God’s true purpose for our lives concerning sex, power and influence. These things in themselves are not wrong but rather have been corrupted, so we will be talking about them one by one.
PRAYER: Father expel every corrupt spirit and understanding in my life. I receive the Spirit of Christ, the Spirit of life and wisdom, Amen.
