TOPIC: “THE DESIRE FOR POWER”
TEXT: Genesis 1:28, Luke 4: 1-13
MEMORY VERSE: “Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only” – Luke 4:8 NIV.
Power is the ability, capacity, or authority to control or influence the outcome of a person or an event.
Power is usually represented through something or conferred on someone by something—whether it is a throne (government, royalty, or heritage), knowledge, or money. Not everyone can be born into royalty or possess the intellect of Newton to influence how the world thinks or moves. However, the third option—money—if the principles of hard work are followed, then almost anyone can acquire it.
Money has become the number one source of power. In fact, many would argue: keep your royalty and your intellect—just give me an abundance of money. Without money, even the first two can seem empty.
The heart of every man seeks power and respect. From the beginning, God instructed man to have dominion over the earth (Genesis 1:28). This desire is innate—it is not wrong.
We see power as an instruction from God but by corruption, the enemy has provided several alternatives to power which many people are constantly chasing after. However, God’s design is for you to walk in dominion, a lot of us see walking with God as foregoing power, but it is all found in God.
What then is God’s desire concerning power for His children?
When Jesus was in the wilderness, the devil took Him to a high mountain and showed Him all the nations of the world, saying, “If you bow down to me, I will give you all of this.” Jesus responded, “You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him alone shall you serve.” (Luke 4:8)
That response reveals the foundation of true power and we will discuss more on it tomorrow.
PRAYER: Father, help me to walk in dominion in every aspect of my life. Today I begin to work in the authority and life of Christ. Father, strengthen me with your power through your Spirit, Amen.
