Topic: “PRACTICAL HOSPITALITY 1“
Text: I Peter 4:9
Memory Verse: “Offer hospitality to everyone without grumbling” – I Peter 4:9.
The bond of love in the church is cemented, held together by hospitality which is the evidence of the professed love. Jesus in one of His last instructions before leaving the flesh amplified the importance of this when in John 21:15-16 told Peter to show evidence of his love for Him by feeding, taking care of His lambs.
Biblical teaching on welfare emphasises caring for the vulnerable and giving community support which include everyone, all classes, not exempting the less privileged – widows and orphans – (James 1:27) and the poor (Pro 14:31). The early Church exemplified this giving example of Christ’s expectation by her conduct recorded in Acts 4:34-35.
While the direct meaning of Hospitality indicates friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors or strangers, biblical interpretation goes beyond that to expect being responsible for the welfare of all creation as a custodian instructed to occupy, a custodian until He comes! The confession of our faith places upon us, the charge to be liberal and to partake of the good things with those who are in need and also to have empathy sufficient to voluntarily, most courteously, with bountiful joy, share of ourselves and our worldly endowment with the love of God and then with men since we understand that there is nothing that we have that has not been received of the Lord, who has given liberally for the equipping of the saints (The church community) 1 Cor 4:7
Hospitality within the Church and the Christian community freely practised by all, breaks all barriers, fostering interdependence and promoting acceptance while dismissing fear of rejection.
Would you consider today and going forward unrestrained hospitality? What about you being an agent in the church to create a welcoming environment, ensuring inclusivity of and for all? What about you considering to offer practical support, food, clothing, financial assistance, provide emotional support, listening to members’ concerns and offering encouragement? Or would you enlist for Visitation Ministry to care for the Hospitalized or home bound?
PRAYER: Heavenly Father bathe me afresh with your Spirit that the fruits thereof may manifest love for your family to which I belong and that I may be hospitable like you who cared for me even when I was not worthy and or lovable, Amen.
