Topic: HIS WISDOM

Text: Proverbs 2:1-11

Memory Verse: “For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding” Proverbs 2:6

When Solomon, assumed Office as King over Israel, he had what you may call a once in a lifetime opportunity to ask God for whatever he wanted, because God had just given him an open cheque, to place a demand on Him for anything whatsoever. Unlike many of us, Solomon wouldn’t settle for the little fries, but went for just one thing: wisdom (1Kings 3:1-14).

While men may be seeking for wise men in their midst for their self-serving interest, the real wise men seek after the Christ in reverent fear and worship (Matt 2:1-2). There is a wisdom of the world that merely entices and enslaves, but there is also the wisdom from above that sets men free from the bondage of sin and the perils of ignorance, having liberated and illuminated their souls (1Cor 18-31). The primary source of wisdom is the Word of God.

We must understand that wisdom is such a pearl of inestimable value, and God is grossly unlikely to dispense it to anyone who is unwilling to ask for it. However, He is more than willing to extend same graciously to that person who will just ask for it (James 1:5).

When God said of Solomon in our reading, that what he had asked for was a good thing, He was simply saying in our own terms, he had asked for the best, and that is why He proceeded to give also the “crumbs” he did not ask for, knowing fully well that they too were necessary (Matt6:30-34).

Finally, the Wise Man further counsels us against being wise in our own eyes, and thereby become conceited (Prov 3:7). Our wisdom does not at its best measure up to the foolishness of God, thus we must tread carefully (1Cor1:18-31; 2:14; 3:18-20). Wisdom is the key thing, go for it at all costs (4:7).

Prayer: How majestic and unsearchable are your ways, oh Lord my God; who can fathom the depths of your understanding? Grant me the wisdom that comes from you alone, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
